We are here to empower Hispanics in STEM

History

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, also known as SHPE, is a national organization formed in 1974 by a group of engineers in Los Angeles. The initial goal of these engineers was to form a national organization of engineers to serve as role models for the Hispanic community.

Established in 2002, SHPE Binghamton sets out to build on this goal. With a focus on unity, service, education, and resilience, we strive to create a strong and supportive network for aspiring Hispanic engineers at Binghamton University.

Some of the most valuable experiences I've gotten out of SHPE are from attending events and getting to meet new people. Whether it was an event we hosted, tabling, community events, or National Convention, I've always had the opportunity to learn something new and grow as an individual. On top of that, having the chance to meet someone new and build relationships every chance possible has only helped me feel more welcomed. It has even led to me calling people I once didn't know my friends.

SHPE has helped me develop both my professional and technical skills. Through the SHPE National Convention, I have been able to connect with recruiters and members from other SHPE chapters, strengthening my networking skills. SHPE has also given me hands-on experience with technical skills such as CAD, which I do not typically use as an Electrical Engineering major. My favorite thing about SHPE is being able to connect with other Hispanics in STEM. Through SHPE, I have built strong friendships and connections that I am very grateful for.

My favorite thing about SHPE is that everyone puts in tremendous effort to make eachother feel seen. The organization is filled with considerate members who have encouraged myself and others to step out of their comfort zone and form connections that will be cherished.
